Fifth Visit28/4/2008, MondayTime: 10.00-11.00 am-left school about 9.10 am, but was stopped by the security guard+he said that we needed to take a gatepass to leave school next time*1 issue to note! Next time, we must remember to get the yellow slip from the office! *-took taxi to the centre ($11.60) T_T so exp..-we checked on the plants and found that they had gotten a rack to keep the plants+the plants are doing well :D
-then, we went to the other side of the centre to practise singing our songs!
+with Timothy playing the guitar as usual
-we came back and helped the other volunteers carry out games
+arranged the chairs
+translated the game instructions to the Indian man and the old lady with the bruise
-the elderly played "Guess the price/weight" of items (like biscuits, packet drinks) +if they guessed it right, they get to keep the item

-they also played a memory game, which includes(us) flipping the cards to match a pair of similar pictures together

++ IDEA! We can create a giant jigsaw puzzle for them during the school holidays and help to piece it together with them! XD ++
-at the end, Timothy played the guitar while the volunteers and Wei Kai sung along in Cantonese, Jing Yuan and I (Shi Hui) clapped along (as we don't really know how to sing in Cantonese)

-by then, its already 11.00 am so we bid goodbyes to them and took a cab back
to school ($10.00)
***Issues to note!*** X_X

Fourth Visit21/4/2008, MondayTime: 10.15-11.00 am-left school at about 9.10am +took 166 to Clementi bus interchange +then, took 99 to the daycare centre*1 issue to note! We wasted too much time travelling.*-asked the Indian man to choose a plant out of the 3 (he took the one with red leaves)-other 2 pots will be kept at the centre (any elderly can take care of them if they want to)-since there were no games organised during that time, most elderly spend their free time sleeping, watching television or piecing jigsaw puzzles together +hence we couldn't sing songs for them (don't want to disturb them) +we talked to the repeating old lady for a while[she cut her hair short! XD cute!] and to the Indian man too*1 issue to note! While listening to the old lady talk, people (actually only me, Shi Hui) should try control her laugther, if not, go to somewhere else to laugh it off discreetly- maybe "check" on the plants like today? :X*-next, we played jigsaw puzzles with the elderly (quietly) +Weikai [1 fell down and bruised her right wrist, the other had black hair] +Jing Yuan [repeating old lady and Indian man] +Timothy and i [some random old lady who came from the feet massage area]-before it was time to go, we practised singing our backup songs +Timothy played the guitar while Jing Yuan and Shi Hui sung along (weikai had to talk to some aunty there :P)-and we ran to catch a cab back to school at about 11.05am? ($9.80)-reached school at 11.25am***Issues to note!*** X_X1) We wasted too much time travelling. Maybe we can use other means of transport?2) While listening to the old lady talk, people (actually only me, Shi Hui) should try control her laugther, if not, go to somewhere else to laugh it off discreetly- maybe "check" on the plants like today? :X

Third Visit14/4/2008, MondayTime: 9.45-11.00 am-left school at about 9.10am and took a cab to the daycare centre ($12.05)-we brought the potted plants and charts for the elderly +we were quite lost on how and when do we explain to them the taking care of the plants and the star rating system (more stars, better plants they can exchange for)hence...+we followed each other as a group every where, which is not very advisible because it shows that we are uncertain of what to do *1 issue to take note! Planning and carrying it out are two completely different scenarios!*-while waiting for the elderly to finish their brunch, we discussed among ourselves after the staff told us to sing songs for them during one of their games(pass the bag until the music stops)+we decided to let Dip Shun/Timothy play the guitar and at the same time, all of us will sing along certain songs *1 issue to note! We have to prepare song lists next time.*
-after our mini last minute discussion, we interviewed the particular old lady who keep repeating her questions given to us +there is a video, voice recording and pictures of the interview*1 issue to note! Other elderly "seemed" to be jealous when all four of us crowded with her to talk. Perhaps we could try to engage more elderly in group discussions.*-next, we went on the sing songs for the elderly as they sat in an oval to play "pass the bag"+there is a video, voice recording and pictures of the game+we can see that most of the elderly have a lag time as they continued passing the bag even though the music had stopped*1 issue to note! When talking to them, we could try to slow down, speak louder and wait patiently for their response because they may have human reaction time error.*-then, the limelight was shone on us as we had to talk about the plants we got for them+we were a bit lost when that happened because most of us did not know how to address a large group of elderly on the plants+because we were inexperienced, did not know which dialect will most of themunderstand and did not know how to speak in that dialect+we asked the elderly whether they were interested in taking care of plants and told those who are interested to raise up their hand *1 issue to note! It works, but i think that we have to speak louder, clearer and in more dialects/ languages*+so, we managed to distribute all the 8 plants we got for them, however, the indian man who had wanted a pot did not get it (all of us did not know - maybe its because he did not raise his hand up?)+for the indian man, we decided to buy a small potted plant ($2.00) for him and bring it on next monday +some of us and some staff informed and reminded the elderly on how to take care of the plants+in the end, the charts we made for the elderly are of no use*1 issue to note! Perhaps we should not plan too much first. Instead,we can try to go with the flow, learn to improvise and do inpromto things better.*
+we can observe that the staff labels their plants with the owner's name(good way for them to remember which plant is theirs)-by then, its already 11.00 am so we bid goodbyes to them and took a cab backto school ($10.00)***Issues to note!*** X_X
1) Planning and carrying it out are two completely different scenarios! 2) We have to prepare song lists next time. Preferbly in oldies in dialects.
3) Other elderly "seemed" to be jealous when all four of us crowded with her to talk. Perhaps we could try to engage more elderly in group discussions.
4) When talking to them, we could try to slow down, speak louder and wait patiently for their response because they may have human reaction time error.
5) It works, but i think that we have to speak louder, clearer and in more
dialects/languages.

Final Proposal for Mr Choy(SDC)Dear Mr Choy Ban Heng,
We are a group of Year 4 students from the CID cluster of Service Learning Project, our teacher in-charge is Mr Liu Yi Jie.
For our project, we would be visiting the Light and Love Social Day Care Centre, Blk 327 Jurong East Street 31 #01-174 Singapore 600327, Telephone 6565 1419, Fax 6565 1419 to interact with the elderly and conduct activities for them.
The activities we will mainly conduct with them are:
1) Music events
2) Gardening
3) Telling of stories
4) Art and crafts
5) Festive decorations
6) Outings
Due to our difference in the timetables as not all of us are in the same class and after school activities that we have to commit to, our group have no other dates to visit the elderly other than during CID lessons on Mondays. (The day care centre is only open for the elderly on weekdays)
Hence, our group will greatly appreciate it if we are allowed to leave school for a short period of time, (9.00-11.20am) for our CID Service Learning Project. Rest assured that we will not be missing any lessons for that period of time as 9.00-9.40am is our recess, while 9.40-11.20am is our CID lesson. We will ensure that we will be able to arrive on time for lessons after CID if we are allowed to visit the elderly.
Thus, we sincerely hope that you will allow us to leave the school for every CID lesson on Monday for out Service Learning Project, starting from this Monday, 7/4/2008.
Please reply as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Group Leader: Timothy Lee Dip Shun (21) 4B
Members: Ng Wei Kai (26) 4B

Time: 3.00-5.15pm
-walked around and talked to most of the elderly
-there was one particular old lady who keep repeating her questions given to us such as which school we are from. She also refused to answer our questions posed to her. *1 issue to note! A lot time is wasted in talking to her, repeating questions.*
-bald ironic man
-when we asked him using Cantonese if he is able to speak Cantonese, he replied "no" in Cantonese, when we use English to ask if he can speak English instead, he replied again, "no, i cannot speak English, I'm hokkien." This time speaking in English.
(he is ironic, we need to find new ways to communicate with him)
-history teacher (old lady)
-she talk us on her experience during WWII, Japanese occupation
-water torture
-beheading
-sex slave for soldiers
-we can see fear and hatred in her eyes during the talk
